Bela Chase was born in New Hampshire in 1802. He married Orilla Miller and lived in New York, where son Abel was born. In 1851, Bela and Orilla Chase purchased their land in section 16 of Alpine Township.

The land that Bela Chase had secured was “patented” to his son Abel Chase and his wife, Rebecca Jane (Herrick) Chase. Abel and Rebecca’s son Charles H. and his wife, Mary (Schindler) Chase, bought this farm. Charles was Alpine Township’s supervisor from 1904 to 1909. Abel and Rebecca also had a daughter, Minnie Chase.
